I am... Part 2: Sleepless in...!!!
Sleepless in...So which place is it... Seattle, bangalore or neverland. I would say the place is irrelevant.
Not that I am one of those isomniac jerks who need bottle full of white coloured deadly pills to keep their eyes closed for the whole damned night. I know that I can go to sleep in five minutes after I lie down on my bed.
Touch wood I would call this a gift of god because I know my friends who keep their bodies streched for few full hours in the darkness trying to figureout the revolutions per minute of the fan hanging over their head. Or maybe some others trying to think of some wonderful and colorful moments they could have had in their life. Or maybe something as weird as keeping the ugliest and most boring book they have even seen in their life by their side trying to read it so that they find sleeping to be a more interesting and worthy act.
What I am here to tell is that I just don't like to sleep. For me, it's a sheer wastage of time. Not that I work on a top secret science project which is going to change the whole world in next few years or that I have the DNA sequence closest to Albert Einstein but... I just don't like it and can't help myself from feeling like this.
I prefer to switch off the lights and write/read blogs on my laptop with headphones at such loud volume as to blow my eardrums and make me feel the sound of music more closely. Music maybe mood dependent. When happy, I like PF Learning to fly or some sweet hindi songs... (Urzu durukut- yahan... shreya ghosal is truly the best singer of contemporary times), when drunken state or philosophical I like hardcore pink floyd, when normal or romantic, i like MLTR, soft english/hindi tracks, november rain-gnr etc.
Ok I went in so much of detail because I live for music. If I were not an engineer (read software professional) i would have been a signal beggar trying to sing at the best of my rhythms. I chose beggar because I couldn't possibly have pursued any profession other than engineering. But I think it's not enough to call this as something abnormal.
Unfortunately I don't have any stories to tell about this strange breed of insomnia of mine. But I know that I can't live without sleeping.. Oh God, I can't explain the agony I am going through while admitting this but yes its true. Few instances of my nightouts I do have though.
B.Tech 2nd year. I had bought a brand new comp.. My first computer and I can't write the excitement I had. Least did the ongoing semester exam dampen my spirits(or may be craze...) And then came the break for the weekends in between the semester exams. Gosh!! I was so happy. But the next exam was Thermodynamics. I was unsure of the chapters I had to go through. I knew that I had decent sessionals and with some effort I could get an A. I was in true dilemma. Then came my master plan...
Vilfredo Pareto gave the 80-20 rule. I read that it can be applied to every damned thing. I saw a fair enough answer to my problem in the rule. And I wrote the final draft of my plan.
20% time to be spent in Thermodynamics. Rest 80% on NFS 5, my latest passion. The schedule was pretty tight. I knew that sleeping was the biggest misfit in my schedule.
So the schedule was finalized. 20% of 48 hrs i.e. 9.8 hrs were given to thermodynamics. The whole of night. With me were two more of my friends... Ritesh and Rohit(though they didn't have the same reasons for nightout as me). I do remember that I had covered the whole syllabus in those 9.8 hrs.
Then came the exam. I was tired and my eyes were cold. The moment I saw the paper, my eyes brightened. It was very easy. But in five minutes my eyes grew cold again. I remember only one thing about the exam. the guy just behind me called for me in between the exam. I thought yes I can tell him the answers for whatever he asks and with this confidence I turned back. The next thing he told me gave me one more cold jerk. With those you-are-the-dumbest kinda looks he commanded me to correct some wrong answer of mine.
Thanks Shailendra...
I knew that I could answer all the questions. My only fault was that I couldn't convey this to our professor. In the end I got a C+. I believe there was some 80-20 in this too.
There's one more instance in which I was very happy about my new bike and thus didn't sleep much that night. Next day I went out for a long ride around bangalore and blew up the front headlight in a head on collision with an electric pole. (Damn!! When will they have underground electric wires in India)
So my fantasies about remaining sleepless look much better when framed and hanged on one drawing room wall of my head.
Still at times I do spend some sleepless nights they maynot always turn into nightouts but 4-5 in the morning is something I do practice once in a while.
I must say I love doing it.
