Glimpses from Barcelona - Part 1

You know what, even I am bored of reporting the trips to different places I visit so here let me try something new. I will show you glimpses from my Barcelona trip... written and photographic. Other than that everything else was usual stuff, we took tickets on Alsa bus, booked 2 beds in Maritima Hostel (located on La Rambla, nice people) and reached barcelona... blah blah... Ok coming to the point...

Glimpse 1

I read a lot about the street called La Rambla on the internet, but had not imagined this. This morning when I walked on the empty wide footpath in the middle of the street with narrow roads on both the sides, I looked at the golden brown maple leaves on the ground and thought this street indeed holds more than this.

Right now, after the sun has gone down, I am walking on La Rambla away from the sea. There are tons of people who are walking and clicking random pictures like me. And there are these folks dressed as clowns, zombies, warriors, fairies and what not. They are not unusual for this street but what makes it interesting everyday is the same level of crowd around each one of them. The guy showing street magic tricks, the other lady dressed as a fairy and many others. As we walk I am sipping through my can of estrella (beer) and so are many others. And there is a group of ladies wearing hair bands with plastic antennas, whistling, singing shouting slogans and dancing down the street grabbing everyone's attention. And there's another group of people dressed in black suits and gowns, surrounding a lady in white wedding gown holding flowers. Is it a La Rambla wedding or just another fun? Every diversion into some other street holds a story. A market similar to the mandis back in India just a bit cleaner and more managed. A street concert by some local group playing spanish songs at full decibal level with people drinking and dancing around them. A connection to another street which is as crowded as La Rambla and gives a feeling of half open pandora´s box of more surprises. A bar on the corner which looks jam packed from outside the windows with a man dressed as santa claus waving at every passer by on the street. And there are small patches of emptiness in the middle of this carnival where I spot a small group of youngsters by the siderail of metro escalator sipping through their cans of estrella throwing a momentary peek at us just to confirm the similarity of feeling.

This is La Rambla, Barcelona.

Glimpse 2

I decided to take a walk in solace and its just impossible for me to choose to walk away from water. So I turned towards the port which was right across the street. Keshari chose to doze off for a while to drain the tiredness of the day. I made it a point not to carry my camera. These were moments by me for me. I walked straight to the stairs leading to the boat yard area where lots of yatches were parked on one side. On the other side a cruise was proceeding to hit the corner of the dock. I just looked at the reflection of the cruise in water besides the almost full moon waving in the water to more prominent imperfection. I sat there for a while. On one side I saw another young man sitting idle like me. On the other side there was a middle aged woman again alone. I just sat there for a while doing nothing thinking of nothing... And it felt so good.

Glimpse 3

There are times when the sounds of background become the only noise. Its 2 am in the night. We picked our cans of estrellas and walked towards the beach, knowing that it would be closed. It isn´t. Maybe our sixth sense drove us there. There are two huge earth movers that were flattening the surface of beach. It´s not tough to dodge them to get to the edge of the beach. The last dry layer of sand. There are few more sitting here like us, distant enough to easily ignore, close enough to instill the known comfort of human presense. The moon is over my head now. And the sea is as noisy as it can be. Its time for the sea to do the talking. I am just here to listen. Distant lights outlining the human creation on the shore are not enough to disturb the deep blue darkness of the sea. It lies there, flamboyant as ever, and I adore it.

~more in next... theres parc guell, olympic stadium and the day at beach
